CapWords alternatives worth trying
Last updated July 7, 2026 · 6 min read
CapWords turns a photo into a flashcard, and it does that one thing with real polish — but it's built to be quick, not deep. If you want the same snap-a-photo mechanic taken further, with phrase practice and actual speaking, CatchFrase and SnapWords are the two worth trying alongside it.
What CapWords does well
CapWords won an Apple Design Award in 2025 for Delight and Fun, and it's easy to see why. Snap a photo of an object — a coffee mug, a traffic cone, a cupcake — and CapWords recognizes it, gives you the word with pronunciation and a sample sentence, and turns it into a sticker with a satisfying sound and animation. Words get grouped automatically by day and category, the review system brings words back on a spaced schedule, and the whole thing works without an account: CapWords doesn't store your photos or require sign-up. It supports 10-plus languages, more than most single-language-family apps in this space, including CatchFrase.
None of that is faint praise. CapWords is a genuinely well-made app, and if all you want is the fastest, most delightful way to turn what's in front of you into a flashcard, it's a strong pick.
Where it stops short
The thing CapWords doesn't try to do is take a word deeper once it's captured. You get the word, a pronunciation you can play back, and one example sentence — and that's the card. There's no way to practice saying it yourself and get feedback; the audio is CapWords speaking to you, not the other way around. One independent reviewer put it plainly: it's a good way to quickly build vocabulary from daily moments, but not a main learning tool, because it lacks structure and deeper practice once you've caught the word.
Where CatchFrase extends the idea
CatchFrase starts from the same move — camera up, object framed, word returned — but treats the catch as a starting point rather than the whole card. Every catch comes with an example sentence you can tap through word by word. With CatchFrase Plus, you can swap one word in that phrase ("big" → "another") and practice the new version, or listen to a short generated conversation that uses your word and try saying a line yourself — transcribed live as you speak, so you can see whether it came out right. Reviews run on FSRS spaced repetition, the same class of algorithm CapWords uses, timed to bring each word back before you'd likely forget it.
The trade-off runs the other way too: CatchFrase supports 9 languages to CapWords' 10-plus, and CapWords' snap-to-sticker moment is, frankly, a little more fun to watch. If delight-per-tap is what you're optimizing for, CapWords still wins that round.
Another option: SnapWords
SnapWords follows a similar recipe to CapWords — snap a photo, get the object named in your target language with a contextual sentence, across 10-plus languages. It's a more straightforward, no-frills take on the same mechanic: free to download with basic snaps included, and a Pro plan that unlocks unlimited captures. Worth a look if you want the photo-to-word idea without CapWords' animation-heavy presentation or CatchFrase's speech and review layer.
Common questions
Is CapWords free?
CapWords lets you capture a limited number of words for free, then offers CapWords Pro as a monthly or yearly subscription for unlimited captures and full review features. Exact pricing is set in the App Store listing.
Does CatchFrase work like CapWords?
The starting move is the same — point your camera at an object and get a card back. CatchFrase then goes further per catch: tap through the phrase word by word, swap one word and practice the variant, or say the word aloud yourself with live transcription, on top of a spaced-repetition review schedule.
Which app should I pick if I want to actually speak the language?
CatchFrase, if speaking is the goal. CapWords reads words aloud with text-to-speech but doesn't check your own pronunciation. CatchFrase Plus lets you say the word or phrase out loud and shows what you said, transcribed live, so you know if it came out right.
Same idea. One more step, out loud.
Free to start — 10 catches a day, no account needed. Photos never leave your phone except to name the word.
